Rutgers was introduced in 1934 by a plant breeder at Rutgers University and quickly became a popular canning tomato for companies such as Campbells and Heinz. At one point Rutgers accounted for 75% of all tomatoes being processed in the US. Rutgers in an intensely red round tomato that provides huge yields great for slicing or canning. Rutgers is high acid tomato making it ideal for canning.
